Patch Your Computer

Overheard while on the phone with Rob ...

"Patching your machine is like having safe sex. Your computer is out there having sex with every other computer on the Internet, and if it doesn't have a condom, then it's gonna get an STD."

So keep your security patches up to date. After all, you wouldn't have sex with a stranger without a condom, right? ;>

Yeah, this is just the short of random shit we come up with ... :)

And while it's not technically true (it'd be hard for your computer to talk to, say, 4 billion other computers in any reasonable amount of time), it's at least potentially true. Most people don't realize that as soon as their computer is on the Internet, it probably has several services open that any one of those 4 billion other machines can connect to. These services may have security flaws in them, or they may provide access to various things on your machine. This is why firewalls and security patches are important.
</soapbox> ;)

But ... yeah. Maybe if people hear that analogy, they'll patch their computers more often and use a firewall. ;P
