A fresh start?

So I'm thinking of moving away from LJ. Every time I glance at my ad blocker, there are an uncomfortably-large number of advertising and tracking companies in the list, and I'm a permanent(!) user. I shudder to think what free users have to put up with.

I'd probably move to Dreamwidth, or maybe to my own site, but I really like how commenting just isn't an issue on large sites. Those of you still reading, where do you spend most of your writing time nowadays? Do you still blog/journal/etc.?

Another advantage to Dreamwidth is that I can mirror back to LJ -- anyone still here can continue reading with no effort (literally, since I make approximately zero posts a year right now :/).

I'm also not really sure if I should import my LJ to wherever I move to, or archive it and start with a fresh slate. I'm leaning toward a fresh slate but I can see advantages to both. Thoughts?

...you're seeing ads? Or rather, AdBlock is for you?

That's weird. I don't. I'm paid, but not permanent. Maybe something is malfunctioning.

Me, I blog at the band site, echo completely to Tumblr and Dreamwidth, then Dreamwidth forwards to LJ for me. It's a pretty good system. (Then I link to it from Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.)

That's for the big daily post. Smaller posts and comments and stuff are unique to each service unless I think they're funny enough to repeat for a different audience. Tumblr gets a bit of that, Twitter gets a bunch. Facebook very little, and Google+ none at all since literally every second time I visit the damn site, it force-refreshes every tab I have open, so I hate it. A lot.

As for feedback and interaction: LJ is still very high on the queue. It's Tumblr first, LJ probably second. Occasionally, on some individual post, I'll get more interaction on an LJ echo than on Tumblr - it's a different audience.

Anyway, that's what I do.

Hmm, thanks.

I don't see (and adblock/RequestPolicy doesn't see) ads, but I see a lot of requests to odd .ru domains and a few well-known trackers (scorecardresearch.com, exelator.com, that sort of thing). It's enough to make me wonder what non-paid users have to put up with. :)

Color me paranoid, but I've been a lot more sensitive to that sort of thing with the recent NSA scandal. And I'd rather not force readers to worry about outside tracking if I can help it.

I didn't realize Tumblr had taken off so much, for all I hear people complain about it. But I'll take a look at that too.

How do you echo from the band site, by the way? I hadn't thought of that, but it's an intriguing idea.

I have a dreamwidth, but don't use it. I'm always snooping around on LJ but rarely post. I have two different blogs, a photography blog and a travel blog, which I do maintain when/if I can while traveling or soon upon returning (but not always and not with completeness, as I should). I really like my blogs and control I have with them. I post the most on facebook. If I were going to start actively developing contacts again, I would most likely choose dreamwidth, as it does mirror LJ and I like the interface.

Wherever you end up, keep me posted, okay?

Absolutely! If possible I will still try to mirror back here, but regardless, I'll at least leave a forwarding address. :)

I've been a paid user since I-don't-know-when. I get notices periodically that my time has been extended due to trouble on their end, thank you Russia. To that end, I forget the free site even has advertisements.

Mostly these days, if I have something quick to say, I'll post it on G+. If I have something more thought out, I'll often post it here. Overall I guess I'm just not that much of a blogger, but I still hang out here to keep up on everyone else.

I have a dreamwidth, but don't use it. It's probably the best choice.

I've also had a DW account for ages, but almost never post anything there; i should look at the mirroring.

I also don't see ads, but I'm on an a very ancient custom S1 LJ style (i wrote it in 2001, and it's still working for me, i'd be surprised if anybody including unpaid users saw ads on it)
