NaNoteWriMo: day 6. I took some of the fragments (but not all of them) from the 2nd and 4th and wrote a little bit more music and realised that some bits that I didn't know connected did in fact connect, and lyrics, and now there's a song! "Shout at the Desert," 3m10s. It's very much a first-draft but that's all I'm going for here, but despite doing nothing yesterday, I remain on schedule.

I know. I'm scared too.

Oh, I think I also managed to record all the bits for a rhythm track for "Getting Away With It" today while in studio. That's on the first CD. I don't know why it's so damned difficult to get right. (Okay, sure, part of it is that it's a marathon at 6m20s but still.) I'd like to perform it at tomorrow night's open mic at Soul Food Books but I'm simply not good enough at it yet with the new lyrics. Next month, for sure.

You are all hereby put on notice!

If my friend is unable to attend Megaplex 2010, I will be for certain attending Rainfurrest in Seattle Washington in Fall 2010.

I will know by December which con im doing.

But if Megaplex is a flop I will be at Rainfurrest, room mate or not.

I liked the Pacific Northwest so much last fall when I went for work, I just have to come back =) Minus the rain/drizzle.

>>>You are all now on notice! =P

As I've mentioned previously, we will be having a Thanksgiving potluck meet at our new place. The meet will be on Friday Nov. 27th, starting around noon, until whenever, and we will have crash space for the weekend.

At this point though, I really need a more firm headcount of how many will be coming, so that we have an idea how big a turkey we need to get. (Once again, we'll be providing a turkey with the usual trimmings, but we ask that in the potluck style, everyone please bring at least one thing to share.)

Please note that, while we've got a decent amount of room at the new place, we don't have an infinite amount of space, so if the guest list gets too large, I'll have to start cutting it off. That being the case, the sooner you let me know that you're coming the better, please. :)

At the moment so far, we have:

[Updated list}

Quentin
Rex
Fal
Wolfgang
Wraith
Batty
Watcher
Wulven
Shy (tentative)
Kuper
Merlechaotix
Xerxes (tentative. Bringing Snow Husky?)
Foxwell (tentative)
Ersis
SkippyFox
Lupine
RustyTiger
Diago
JBadger
JimmyWolf (tentative)
Sashatigress
Cubbi
Mae
Tony Ringtail
Snow Kitty
Steph
RedFox (Maybe. And, I'm assumimng that means TigerKitten?)
Ethan Husky (maybe)
Zech (tentative. Bringing Layne?)

I think a few other people from long island told me they'd be coming as well, but I wanna reconfirm that. So, in any case, please comment here if you will be coming, along with what you will be making or bringing. :) (all comments are screened)

Directions will be sent out to confirmed attendees.

See you there! :)

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Here is a list of things that are pissing me off recently.
  • Slightly more than half of Maine: I am so done with you, social conservatives. I tried to pretend that maybe your behavior was a result of "being dumb," but more and more your ignorance is indistinguishable from hate. Besides, you really should be spending the millions of dollars you obtained (by spreading lies) fighting poverty/hunger/genocide rather than trying to run other people's lives... especially when your "mandate" has thinned from 20% to 3% in the past few years. You're fighting a very expensive battle and you're eventually going to lose anyway. Is this really what Jesus would do? I think he would be making this face at you right now: >:[

My advice to you: (a) Read the writing on the wall, and (b) Get a life and stay the fuck out of mine. If not, (c) Eat horseshit and subsequently die in a fire. Fuck you.

And gay activists: We probably have more important things to spend money on right now, too. For example, the GLBT youth suicide rate is still very scary and somewhat more urgent. :/

  • My laptop: So yesterday I was trying to sync a bunch of data and update all my Mac software in preparation for (wait for it) backing up all of my data. I have a new, shiny 1TB external hard drive, and so I'm finally going to take that one easy, sanity-preserving step.

But not is all right in the kingdom of my computers! After my laptop restarts to install a bunch of updates it presents me with a dialog box which proclaims that some of the update files were corrupted (somehow) and gives me one button: Restart. I restart and I get the gray screen of death, something about a kernel panic, and instructions on how to restart my computer manually in four languages. Ruh-roh!

So I take it to the Apple store in SF where I wait for my appointment (along with a ridiculously hot redheaded blue-eyed guy in full racing leathers). The computery guy boots OSX off an external hard drive and then runs disk utility on Severian II. Looks like I have bad sectors? But the hard drive is showing up, so there is some hope! As soon as I get home I install Leopard on my 1TB external and boot my laptop that way, and sure enough, my documents seem to be intact.

Still not sure about the laptop's internal, though. Possibly I just need to wipe it and do a fresh install (of Snow Leopard, finally!), and if not I'll just get it (the HD) replaced. Because I have all the money and time in the world! Woog.

  • Math software: The most relevant stuff for me works only in Sage, which is open source and exhibits the typical open-source-project problems. It also strongly types, which is annoying because I want to treat modular forms both as elements in a graded ring and elements in a vector space, and so far I can't figure out how to let them wear both hats simultaneously (I want a basis for a space of cusp forms but I also want to multiply them together).

I'm having lunch with William Stein in half an hour and maybe there's a work around (edit: he told me how to do things!), but still. I wish I could have the syntactic simplicity and beauty of Mathematica with the versatility of Magma and Sage all in one program, but it is not to be.

Oh yeah, my icon reminds me: The new Evangelion movies are pretty good. Henry and I watched the first one and were quite impressed. Also, nostalgic.

Woohoo! I managed to accomplish my first heel-toe downshift in Shiro yesterday.

I even managed to repeat my success a couple times more during the day. The amusing thing is I was smoother on heel-toe than I have been recently on normal downshifting... O.o

Everytime I change my driving style to be more race-like with Shiro, he seems to get happier. >.>

Anyone with a radio receiver is welcome to participate, no amateur radio license is required to just listen and search for the fox.

On Saturday the fox will be stationary, and for an added challenge on Sunday, the fox will be "mobile" (moving around the hotel)

The last couple of days were not so good, mostly because of horrible elections. I hate elections. They're always about kicking queers in the teeth.

Anyway, I wasn't doing much yesterday, or a lot of today, but this afternoon I did get going on a very angry song which is probably more of a Mary Kay and the Cosmetics piece than a Crime and the Forces of Evil piece, but! It's three minutes of music, so that's three more to the tally! Plus a little under a minute of two song pieces that I'll work into something else but I don't know what yet. Tallies so far:

Music: 7m. I am currently on schedule. Yay!
Song fragments (don't count towards goal but I'm keeping track): 3m

Things have been busy in all sorts of ways! Work has actually been pretty light recently, but I've been trying to catch up with some other stuff! This weekend is the Minna no Anime Halloween party, so I've been trying to get my costume done for that. I've also been updating the master karaoke list, which is taking a lot longer than I thought it would. The collection has tripled since last year! I'm almost done with the "P" section. I hope I can finish tomorrow.

Uhhhh.... I don't think I mentioned it earlier, but a couple weeks ago I got a big Palkia plush in the mail. His name is Atlus and he's really shy. A couple days ago I got a Groudon plush I had ordered. His name is Apollo. I actually have photo stories for both of them Oh!! And also my third new Pokémon plush, Mackenzie. I have a lot of photostories to post, but they'll have to wait until at least after this weekend! I'll talk about Y-Con after this weekend! (Short version, it was AWESOME)

Sorry I haven't replied to any messages and haven't commented much on journals! It'll be a bit longer before I write back properly!

Sorry!

It looks like I won't know if I have Jury Duty or not for sure until 11 am tomorrow at the earliest.  So I guess the question is -- should I go into work anyway then find out my fate at 11, or should I stay home?  Keep in mind I have a bit of a commute to work so it wouldn't exactly be a quick drive, but on the other hand, I could stand to lose a day's pay.

The second circuit court of appeals has thrown out the torture lawsuit of Canadian citizen Maher Arar against the US government. Mr. Arar was tortured not directly by the US but was abused in US custody, after which he was rendered to Syria for torture at American request. PM Harper has apologised to Mr. Arar for the lack of action to protect him by his government.

The court ruled 7-4 that, "even if the government violated Arar's Constitutional rights as well as statutes banning participation in torture, he still has no right to sue for what was done to him" if someone thinks it might affect national security secrets. Mr. Obama's legal team didn't argue this case, but has been using the same secrecy-must-prevail defence in a variety of other cases, including those against the illegal domestic spying programme, and so on.

Meanwhile, an Italian court has tried and convicted 23 US agents in absentia on torture and extraordinary rendition charges. Charges against three others were rejected by the Italian judge. The US refused extradition of all those charged, so the trial is mostly symbolic, tho' I imagine all those involved should stay out of Italy and possibly the entire EU for a while.

Yeah, Maine.

Mr. Obama's Organization for America sat Maine out, ignoring Question 1 so hard that their get-out-the-vote push in Maine didn't even mention the biggest issue on the ballot - but did find time to ask Maine voters to help out in New Jersey with phonecalls.

Some of you may say or think that it's not appropriate for Mr. Obama to comment on a state measure - particularly not a queer rights measure - or that it's not politically smart, or safe. Fuck that. Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and then-sitting president Jimmy Carter all weighed in against a goddamn anti-gay measure in California in goddamn 1978. Queers? Not real popular at the time. But here it is THIRTY. ONE. YEARS. LATER. and Mr. Obama and his party organisation play it further to the right than Ronald Reagan. Fuck. That.

One Catholic's letter resigning from the church after the church there did things like have second collections to fund anti-gay ads in the state and loaned staff full-time to the anti-gay campaign. Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight says he's going to have to seriously consider a Bradley Effect on GBLT issues. Andrew Sullivan notes without attribution that before Referendum 71 is even decided that anti-gay activists in Washington State are planning another anti-gay campaign. I haven't seen that anywhere else yet, tho', so I don't know what he's seeing; maybe this bit here about the fundamentalist movement declaring itself revived and [p]lans are under way for a new and greater resolve to be present during the 2010 session and future elections. Pam Spaulding talks about how glad she is her rights aren't subject to a vote every couple of years, and how the fundamentalists and social right use it to rake up anti-gay hate over, and over, and over again. (There's also a nice quote from Matt Barber, formerly of Concerned Women for America, coming out again and saying that domestic partnerships are just as bad as marriage.)

Truth Wins Out has a column that's been quoted around a lot today, I'm gonna quote a bunch of it:
It is time we wake up and acknowledge that the GLBT fight for equality is the world’s first “Civil Likes” movement. Each year, a popularity contest is held somewhere on the map and if the locals find us likeable our families are protected. If the natives have a negative view of gay people, we remain second-class citizens.

Given this reality we have to make a major choice.

We can declare the current process a disgusting and humiliating insult to our humanity and opt out of all future referendums. The movement would make the case to the nation why such votes are anathema to American values and in the process educate people about our families and quest for equality. A powerful campaign of continued and sustainable civil disobedience would have to supplement this strategy.

Or, we can continue to participate in degrading referendums. But, if we do so, we have to stop pretending that the majority of the American people understand the U.S. Constitution, much less the notion of equality. Those who vote against GLBT rights simply do not like gay people and their antipathy, often masked by religious bigotry, overrides the idea of equal protection. What our public relations experts will have to figure out ways to make us more likeable and overcome such objections.

This idea of sucking up to voters is as nauseating as it is un-American. Reality, however, necessitates unless we opt out of the process, we have to sober up and admit that we are perennially running for Prom Queen, yet have failed to take home the crown.
You should read the whole thing, not just this excerpt, because it's not as simplistic as your first reaction will lead you to think.

Also, courtesy Slog, go read David Mixner's column, "Enough, No More, Enough":
First and foremost, Enough!

We have poured over $100,000,000 in the last two years into efforts where Americans feel it is there obligation to vote on our freedom. The entire concept is repugnant and disgusting....

Second, call this campaign against us what it is - Gay Apartheid.

Refuse to allow any of our fellow Americans, President Obama or our allies to view this as a political issue who time hasn't quite come. America is in the process of creating a system of Gay Apartheid. We will not quietly sit and accept it. All over the place, this nation is creating one set of laws for LGBT Americans and another set for all other Americans. That is the classic definition of Apartheid. Either our political allies are for Gay Apartheid or against it. If they are against it, they must fight with us and no longer duck like President Obama did in Maine and Washington. There is no half way in fighting Apartheid....

Third, it is clear that the political establishment in Washington doesn't understand that we no longer willing to wait until it meets their timetable or political needs.

President Obama standing on the sidelines in Maine and Washington was appalling. The failure of our national organizations and leaders to demand his involvement was equally appalling. The outrageous act of the Democratic National Committee sending an email into Maine asking Maine Democrats to call into NEW JERSEY instead of to support the fight against bigotry was unbelievable. No one gets to sit on the sidelines in an epic battle against apartheid and no one gets a free pass. If you want our support, you have to earn it...

Does anyone think after yesterday election results and the upcoming 2010 election, Obama has the ability to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and "DOMA" next year? Does anyone really believe we haven't already missed a historic opportunity in the first 10 months of this year? Only a courageous fighting President and Congress can now help turn us this around and that we have not seen so far. Enough.
There's going to be a Part II of this column, but it's not posted yet.
