Not a software issue. Far as the software is concerned, everything is fine until the OS tries to read the CD.

Using cdrtools on Linux.

They're already up-to-date. It just uses the standard in-kernel ATA driver, which AFAIK has been stable for quite some time now.

The fact that it's random (i.e. different blocks every time, even when burning the same thing) strongly suggests that it's hardware. The fact that it burns fine on the Windows machine suggests it's not a bad-media issue. That leaves a physical problem with the drive, or the path between the drive and the motherboard.
