In California, the red stripe indicates you may be under 21, and thus can't drink alcohol. They put text in the red stripe: "Age 21 in YYYY". (If you look under 35, bars, restaurants, etc. are required to check your ID.)

Until today, my license had the strip with "Age 21 in 2004". This is the first time I've had to renew my license since I turned 21, so my new one doesn't have the red strip on it.

I'm officially Old(tm). :/

Ah, that's why the bouncer that carded me at a bar (for lunchtime) on one of my more recent trips to San Jose was so confused.

California also puts a second red stripe on if your under 18. They denote changes to your legal rights.

And I didn't feel the Earthquake...

I think that stripe is blue, unless they changed it recently...
