As many already know, devpreed graduated today. I was there, along with muleherd, brokenpipe, robsnonjournal, northing, doctor_samuel, midendian, and of course, virtualmom and queueball.
The ceremony (which was the smaller ceremony for the CSC department) went well...it was reasonably small, short and to the point. Paul's was easily the best speech of the three...I believe he posted it online someplace, but I don't know where. If I learned one thing from that speech, it's that I should always, always use a firewall. You never know who might be portscanning.
We then went out to Montana de Oro, and scattered his Dad's ashes into the sea. It was a rather solemn moment, for everyone involved...as the waves carried them away. I remember he passed me the picture of his dad to hold briefly, while he was climbing down the side of the hill to get to the water. It was a happy picture, taken at the Madonna Inn when moving Paul in his Freshman year. It seemed rather ironic, and fitting, to be laying his Dad to rest on his graduation.
We stayed, and watched the waves briefly...and there was light banter between us all. He seemed reasonably OK, which is good. I just hope that that was, in fact, the case.
Afterwards, we stopped by the Madonna Inn, for feet-washing and clothes-changing, and then headed over to Tsurugi's for some damn fine sushi. Anticipating this, I had stopped at the ATM before leaving the ceremony to get some cash with which to pay...however it was not to be. His mom insisted on paying for the whole dinner...all 9 of us. Though she at least let us cover the tip.
After Tsurugi's, we headed over to kion's house (even though he was out of town...we still borrowed it, with permission, of course), and watched some Family Guy and some Austin Powers. Then...everyone went home, and I'm probably not going to see most of them again for a long time.
I'm too tired, stuffed and jumbled to write about my feelings right now. However, that SBT (solitary beach trip) I've been putting off for 3+ days is happening for sure tomorrow...so I'll have time to sort everything out then. There's a lot going through my head (about today, and about everything else) that I want to write about...but I haven't had the time, or the energy, to deal with any of it.
